An Updated R2H

Filed Under (Miscellany) by Susy on 08-06-2007

Asus R2H
And now for the good news from Asus:  the R2H UMPC has been updated!  The new R2HV-A1 has a Pentium-M, 1280MB RAM, an 80 gig harddrive, and it now has Vista Home Premium installed.  The battery also looks larger as well.  Full details are at the Asus R2H page (scroll to the bottom).
The Asus R2H is still one of the most attractive UMPCs on the market, IMHO.  With the new upgrades, I may just have to cave and take one for a test drive.

The Pink, It Kills…

Filed Under (Miscellany) by Susy on 08-06-2007

Asus Pink LaptopOkay, I’ll admit that being a vegetarian means that I don’t exactly appreciate leather.  Still, I’m somewhat baffled by Asus’ new attempt to market to the female population.  A Target exclusive, the Asus S6 pink leather edition, has the specs of an average 12″ laptop.  But it’s pink and leather so therefore it’s marked up to $2199.99.  If I’m going to drop that much on a laptop, it’s going to be an ultraportable tablet that’s actually useful.  However, I’m not a typical consumer so I imagine this is selling like hotcakes.  And in related news, Target has an entire category devoted to pink electronics.  This is me rolling my eyes.

really strange wireless problems

Filed Under (Miscellany) by Susy on 26-05-2007

My internet access at home has been really flaky lately. My wireless card works fine at work and my router seems to be giving a good signal, but I can only get internet access at home using my Panasonic R3 running Ubuntu Edgy. When I try Windows, I get nothing. ???

I’m wondering if it is because I live in an apartment and all my neighbors also have wireless routers and it is just signal congestion, but the problem is certainly strange.

why I really need a UMPC

Filed Under (Miscellany) by Susy on 30-04-2007

I love the UMPC platform. ’nuff said. I could go into a whole list of reasons why I think a UMPC could really fit into my whole mobile lifestyle and why I am saving up to get one. However, here is a prime example: today at 2:03 PM I was browsing my RSS feeds and I noticed that Kevin Tofel had posted jkOnTheRun’s newest contest to celebrate their site reaching its six millionth page view. I had to leave in 5 minutes to take a 30 minute van ride to the middle school where I am mentoring. I’m pretty sure you heard my scream of frustration. :)

Now if I had a UMPC, I could have tethered it to my cell phone and used the thirty minute ride to enter the contest. So here is my number one reason for getting a UMPC: not having one makes it harder to get free gadgets. And I’m all about free gadgets.

Seriously though, congratulations to James Kendrick and Kevin Tofel for reaching this milestone. I check jkOnTheRun daily and I’m a fan. Hopefully, I’ll have my UMPC when they reach twelve million page views!

Is it a UMPC or isn’t it?

Filed Under (Miscellany) by Susy on 28-11-2006

Either way the Kohjinsha SA1 should make the people complaining about the lack of keyboard in a UMPC happy.  This Japanese device has a 7″ screen, 40 gb harddrive (up to 80 gb), keyboard, touchscreen swivel display, and up to 1 gig of RAM.  So far it’s slated to be released only in Japan but the folks at Dynamism already have it up for preorder.  At $999, it really is tempting.  My main concern is the 500 Mhz processor and the fact that I really wish it came with 1024×600 resolution instead of 800×480.  Still, it looks like a nice little device!

Return from Hiatus

Filed Under (Miscellany) by Susy on 28-11-2006

I sincerely apologize for the long break in updating Scarlet Umbrella.  I don’t want to bore you with details but I do feel that an explanation is in order.  Basically, real life got real complicated real fast.  My “day job” is a graduate student.  This semester I have alternated working on purifying a protein with one of my group’s collaborators and having my first “hands on” experience playing a professor.  I won a fellowship to work with a mentor in my department developing my skills as a teacher.  For the fellowship, I tutored students, developed my own lectures, wrote my own homework and quizzes and led review sessions for a class of 170 students.   Around the same time, I had to deal with some personal difficulties including my aunt’s cancer becoming terminal.

I hope that everyone has been doing well these past few months and has been having fun inking.

How to be Popular with Geeks

Filed Under (Miscellany) by Susy on 19-08-2006

I brought my tablet to a meeting of a bunch of my fellow graduate students.  The consensus was that my tablet was pretty cool.  It manages to solve two problems that most graduate students have:  we have heavy laptops and we have to lug around a lot of papers.  My tablet is *light.*  It weighs about three pounds and I can save all of my papers onto it.  I am able to carry it to meetings and take notes without causing a distraction as well as have all my notes and my agenda with me.  In this particular meeting, I was able to access the internet and pull up the fall class schedule and have it as a reference for the group.

Tabuntu- Ubuntu for tablets

Filed Under (Miscellany, Software, Technology) by Susy on 05-08-2006

When I first got a tablet, one of my coworkers asked if I knew whether or not you could install Linux on it.  My response was probably, although you would kill all the tablet functionality.  I think one of the signs that tablets are finally being appreciated, at least among geeks, is the growing interest in creating a tablet PC Linux distro.  I found this discussion on what could be included in a tablet PC version of Ubuntu interesting.  Although I am perfectly happy with Win XP Tablet PC edition, I figure all software development in the tablet PC world is a good thing so I add my vote for a tablet PC Linux distro.
